Donald Trump Should Hire Bernie Ecclestone
THE INSIDE LINE F1 PODCAST IS HOSTED BY MITHILA MEHTA AND KUNAL SHAH. THIS FORMULA ONE PODCAST OFFERS A UNIQUE HUMOUROUS VIEW ON THE SPORT.
Bernie Ecclestone’s been FIRED! We can almost imagine how his good friend, Mr. Donald Trump, would tell him this line ‘The Apprentice’ way!
Either way, what should Bernie Ecclestone now do to keep himself busy? In this week’s episode, we’ve suggested a few whacky ideas like being hired as a government relationship expert by Donald Trump (given how Trump’s relationships are already at an all-time low!) or turning a television commentator. Imagine the wit and dark humour and the inside stories that he could share with the viewers. Could he also start new businesses with fellow unemployed stalwarts in the Paddock, Nico Rosberg and Ron Dennis?

Bernie Ecclestone’s farewell – well he didn’t have one (or hasn’t had one yet!). Felipe Massa on the other hand has had two farewells! Will the teams and drivers get together give the sport’s former CEO a proper farewell ever? Or are they just too happy to see him go?
Formula 1 has replaced Bernie Ecclestone with 3 experts. Clearly, his small shoes are and will be too big to fill. We agree with Mark Hughes (via Twitter) that Formula 1 should also consider hiring a circuits expert. Interesting!
Apart from relief to many in the sport, the minnows and the fans in particular, Ecclestone’s dismissal has offered us much fodder and humour for this week’s episode. As did Toto Wolff’s statement that Formula 1 shouldn’t mess with its fans.
Ross Brawn, the 8-times World Champion, who is now back as the sport’s sporting chief has made the right noises already. 25 Grand Prixs a season, a budget cap and making Formula 1 viable for the smaller teams. Let’s hope he’s allowed to walk this talk. And let’s hope he’s able to do so soon enough or else we could see Sauber go down the Manor way.
Ecclestone’s departure could also see a lot more Formula 1 drivers sign up to race in non-Formula 1 series? Felipe Massa has already made the first move by agreeing to test Jaguar’s Formula E car soon. Preparing for your debut season, Felipe? His former partner and now Mercedes driver, Valtteri Bottas, has claimed that Williams will win races sooner or later – if that was the case, why did you leave them, Valtteri? Classic case of corporate PR crap in the sport! And if the indications are true, get ready for a Lauda-Bottas bromance in 2017!
Lewis Hamilton’s helmet design challenge is an interesting way to engage fans. But how would the designs turn out if Bernie Ecclestone and Adrian Newey decided to submit theirs? Imagine a ‘blown diffuser’ being added to Newey’s design.
Lastly, the two year absence of Pastor Maldonado from the sport has prompted the FIA to go lenient on ‘driver collisions’ in 2017. Let’s hope it turns out to be the season that we’re all expecting it to be!
