2013 Monaco Grand Prix: I Saw The Silver Buses In Action

Nico Rosberg - 2013 Monaco Grand Prix

Yes, Sebastian Vettel called them the ‘Silver Buses’! And it seems silver buses they were in the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. There’s more on the arrows to buses theory in the latest episode of the Inside Line F1 Podcast.

However, this Formula1 blog post is much about my trip to Monaco as it is about the Formula1 podcast. Rishi and I got together once again to bring to you this episode. Do let us know how you like it. And like always, the contents of the podcast are below.

As for my trip to Monaco, as most of you would already know, I was there on work. Work at Grand Prix weekends is fun, because that is actually where the ‘product’ is displayed to the global audience. Between the GPs, the ‘product’ (our race cars if you didn’t get it already!) goes back to the factory where it is visible to only a select few!

On Saturday while I was getting ready to leave my hotel room for Qualifying, the iPad started playing tracks from the Michael Jackson playlist. Funnily, most of the songs summarized my experience of the GP; ‘Thriller’, ‘Remember The Time’ and of course ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’. (And ‘Blood On The Dance Floor’ for Pirelli and Mercedes, maybe?)

Nico Rosberg - 2013 Monaco Grand Prix

Enough of the entertainment and back to the sport, this wasn’t my first trip to a Formula1 Grand Prix, however, it was my first to Monaco. And I must say that for any Formula1 fan, you’ve not seen a race live, until you’ve experienced it in Monaco. The entire country was abuzz on the four days of the GP weekend (yes, Thursday onwards) and was celebrating the arrival of the Formula1 circus. Most of the parties (between track sessions) were held on the circuit itself (La Rascasse being the most famous!).

I had a few amazing moments in Monaco the best of which was being driven (in a road car and NOT by an F1 driver) from the famous hairpin, through the famous the tunnel and around the swimming pool complex! Yes, we did hit a kerbstone just for the heck of it!

And I am not the types to go clicking (or excessively) during my GP trips, however, for those keen, you’ll can see my Monaco Grand Prix album on Facebook.

To the podcast, here are the contents of the Inside Line F1 Podcast: From Silver Arrows to Silver Buses (YouTube channel: http://youtu.be/7xi9eAyLdI4)

  • Mercedes & Pirelli show that there are no secrets in Formula1! (Read: Pirelli Spin All In Spain)
  • Could Rosberg’s race have ended due to a ‘bird hit’? And was his win a pure coincidence? (Read: Ross Brawn’s Last Season In Formula1)
  • Silver Buses aided Paul Di Resta’s charge from P17; good drive!
  • Driver of the day: Adrian Sutil or Sergio Perez?
  • Mercedes to resume ‘racing in reverse’ in the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix?
  • Monaco saw the return of our favourite characters, ‘Crash’jean & ‘Crash’naldo!
  • And we caught hold of a secret message Lotus sent to Kimi mid-race.
  • Also, Rishi and I are pissed off at the TV producer in Monaco. Hear to know why!
  • Lastly, we now know what Felipe Massa learned from Michael Schumacher when they were team-mates at Ferrari. Of course, we spread the knowledge!

Short break our listeners before we meet next week for the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix. If tyre talk was already overbearing for us all, brace for more of it in the weeks (and hope not, but months) to come! And last but not the least, here’s why Pirelli shouldn’t renew their Formula1 contract for 2014 and also why and Indian tyre manufacturer should replace Pirelli in Formula1.

  • Terrific race, ample entertainment, impressive overtakes and spectacular crashes 😉 and a very distinctive track location from the rest – What did I miss? Nothing!
The drivers with the pseudo name ‘crash’ were missing action for sometime, glad to see them back into doing what they really are good at!
It kind looked like Rishi’s havan really worked for Sutil! Ask him to keep doing whatever that he was doing along with counting the tiles 🙂
So Sutil is the man – Great drive, awesome overtakes and hope to see more of him in Canadian GP!
    Happy for SFI.
About the funny bird testing: I think to make F1 even more commercial and also to introduce something new every year, FIA should allow Firearms(not a fatal one but a sedative one) on the front wing over a mini rotating wheel, so that when the drivers happen to see something coming towards them, they can immediately activate the firearm(with the addition of a colored button in the steering wheel) and that should bring the bird down, something like a 007 car. Hmm…I think I should stop watching super hero stuffs, HaHa!
Answer to the contest: Indian GP 2011!! Massa’s Kerb”!!
As always a nice podcast and I’m sure you had a blast in Monaco!! I think you should take Rishi along with for one GP at least and do a live podcast from there, think about it.

    • Thanks Pavithra. Surprising that I am responding so late, but good to hear your views and that you were happy for SFI and Adrian. Hopefully Canada will have more in store for the team. And bingo on Massa’s kerb issue in 2011 Indian GP, you are turning into an ardent follower, I must say. As for the firearm tactic, you are indeed watching too much superhero stuff!! 😛 I had a blast in Monaco, hope you got to see the pics as well.
Rishi’s always welcome to the GPs, only that he’s busier than ever with his radio show!
Latesh, thanks to you too. Yes, you too got the answer absolutely spot on! Interesting view on Perez = Vettel in 09/10, but do you really think Perez is Championship material? Yes, Rishi’s conversion to an F1 pundit has almost happened after his successful havan for Adrian Sutil. Hopefully we have better things in store in Canada! Let us hope for the best. And I am glad you liked my pictures too!

  • CONGRATULATIONS RISHI , FOR THE SUCCESSFUL HAVAN FOR SUTIL,
AND CONGRATULATIONS KUNAL FOR AN AWESOME COVERAGE. LOVED THOSE RARE PICS SHOWCASING THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PRINCIPALITY.
    RISHI, U HAVE DONE IT..
EN ROUTE 2 BECOME AN IMPACTFUL PUNDIT AFTER THIS HAVAN( F1 PUNDIT , I MEAN).
I WOULD LIKE 2 HIGHLIGHT THAT GUYS , THE MOMENTS MISSED BY VARIOUS BROADCASTERS WILL HOPEFULLY REACH THEIR EARS SOON,
I MEAN HOW CAN THEIR CAMERAS MISS OUT THE “MAGNET” KIMI.
    KEEP THE GOOD JOB.
MOVE OVER WOULD LIKE 2 LISTEN YOUR VIEWS ABOUT PEREZ ,
SEEMS 2 BE A VETTEL IN THE MAKING.
(REMEMBER VET IN 2009-10 SEASON- THE CRASHKID)
AND A WELL FRAMED QUESTION PUT FORWARD YAAR.
    NICE CONNECT.
IN 2011 MASSA HIT A KERB AT BIC, 2012 HE AGAIN HIT THE SAME KERB DURING PRACTICE,
LEADING JPSI NAMING THE KERB A ‘MASSA’S KERB’.
    TALKING ABOUT BUSES,
THIS WORD IS REGULARLY USED AS A SYMBOL OF CRITICISM. IRVINE AND BARRICHELLO USED IT (ACTUALLY THE WORD WAS TRUCK) FOR FERRARI B4 LEAVING IT.AND NOW VETTEL FOR MERCEDES.
